Ep 6: Margo: Managing Expectations and Multiple Jobs

An anxiety provoking situation can turn into a good opportunity. - Margo

Margo Poole graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education. She earned her master's degree in physical therapy and has been practicing for over 20 years. Margo was a member of the American Physical Therapy Association for 11 years and became an APTA-credentialed Clinical Instructor in 2013.   She earned a Corrective Exercise Specialist certification in 2017 and a dry needling certification in 2023.

Her professional experience includes out-patient orthopedics, sports medicine, in-patient orthopedics/medical/surgical, aquatic therapy, industrial medicine, oncology and vestibular rehabilitation.  She has been a licensed foster parent since 2021.  She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, playing outdoors, photography, smiling, and volunteering in the community!

In our conversation, we discuss:

  • Gracefully turning down roles that aren’t right for you - even when others have high hopes for you to take the role.

  • Getting clarity on expectations in new roles

  • Fulfilling our dreams can also come with difficult challenges

  • Some of our greatest friendships and supports can come by expanding to friendships with people of any faith

Some takeaways:

  1. As we start this podcasting journey, Margo’s story holds important reminders: professional and leadership development journeys look different for everyone. Sometimes, it’s about deepening professional knowledge and ability. Some people don’t want leadership roles or find it’s not the right moment to step into one. That does not make their experiences or careers any less valuable.

  2. Opportunities don’t always come knocking. When they do, it’s important to consider what is best for life.

  3. Learning company expectations in a new role can be vital to job performance. When you’re not sure what the expectations are, it is critical that you track them down—even if you have to get scrappy and research company policy. As a leader, the measure of whether you’ve provided enough information is whether your employees are confident and accountable. Don’t presume you’ve shared enough: take extra time to talk with new employees and address their questions.

  4. Sometimes, our dreams make things better while also making them more challenging - like becoming a foster parent. We can prepare for challenging moments by being wise financially, tapping into resources around us, and being very careful of what we allow to use our time.

  5. Faith and Leadership | We can find a community of support in many places, including people who are not members of our faith. Margo’s story is an important reminder to welcome friendships with a diverse group of people and that we can befriend without having to have church as the focal point. Each of her friends was coping with significant challenges at the time. Who in your community might need a friend right now?
