Ep 5: Misty Bastian: What to do if You've Made a Big Mistake | Career Flexibility | Finding a Strong Leadership Voice in a Volunteer Role

It doesn't do any good to sit there and (tell yourself) “Oh my gosh, I did this. I'm not going to tell anyone”, or “I'm just going to let it stew in my head.”

Misty Bastian received an undergraduate degree in Communications and a graduate degree in education focusing on the arts. She has volunteered as an ESL instructor, worked as the director of communications at Jamberry, and worked for several years as a Senior Consultant for Strategic Communications and Project Management at companies including Booz Allen Hamilton and Acuity. In her current role as Director of Global Philanthropy at Doterra, she oversees the day-to-day operations of the doTerra Healing Hounds Foundation.

In our conversation, we discuss:

  • The “big doozy” - what happens when you make a mistake so big it’s… global

  • The value of integrity - owning your actions even when it hurts

  • Career flexibility requires patience, working to get the role, and leveraging the people in your network

  • Even through challenges, the use of talents has can bring joy

  • Faith & Leadership | If we focus on the people we need to help, we’ll find the courage to speak up.

(As always, look to the end of the newsletter if you want to find the start time for a particular conversation point.)

Some takeaways:

  1. There are little mistakes and big mistakes. WHO you work for can determine whether you have support in either of those moments. Misty’s strong support network from her manager, coworkers, and team played a significant role in how she got through her experience.

  2. At the end of the day, ruminating on the experience and beating yourself up will only make the experience harder. Instead, find a support network - especially if you have times when you are by yourself.

  3. Career flexibility and pivoting to different types of roles can be a wonderful experience that introduces you to new people and experiences, and you can learn a lot of new things.

  4. Although Misty has had challenging experiences, she’s also experienced a lot of joy in using her talents.

  5. Leadership & Faith | Women can develop a stronger leadership voice by thinking and focusing on the needs of the people they are serving. When you have others’ well-being in mind, it’s much easier to speak up.
